Higher water temperature and the use of washing machine will increase stress to the fabric as well.Wash inside out, delicate, and pull them out before any spin. Raws/unsanforized will shrink after washing and choosing the right size may be tricky; prewashed/sanforized will stretch after a while, depending on fabric. It's easier for me to find raw denim in a cut/style/color/material I prefer compared to washed denim. For convenience sake I prefer raw denim.But the real reason is that the starch is used to make the yarn easier to process through the various machines and apparatuses while it is being woven on the loom to make denim. Raw jeans provide a blank canvas or clean slate – that picks up fades better than washed denim. Raw denim doesn't "pick up fades". Remember though for sherpa jackets they tend to need to be a bit bigger due to the lining plus the idea that you'll mostly be wearing this in the cold so probably layering and therefore want a bigger fit. I think a medium with that in mind would be too small. For reference I'm 5'9 190-200 lbs and I'm always a L or XL in denim jackets.What is raw denim? This is my first pair of raw denim jeans and they’re not nearly as rough-feeling as I expected.Raw denim is denim that has not been pre-washed nor has it been distressed in any way.
